Men's crew finishes well at Head of the Genesee

ROCHESTER, NY - RIT's men's crew team had a good day of racing at the Head of the Genesee, held Saturday in Genesee Valley Park. RIT's varsity eight had a sound performance and the novice eight “A” earned a bronze medal. The Head of the Genesee features a unique two race format, combining a 5,000 meter head race in the morning with a 1,500 meter sprint in the afternoon. The sprint time is tripled and added to the head race time for a total time.

The varsity 8 finished sixth overall in the 17-boat collegiate division in 29:52.82. Mercyhurst (29:13.70) won the race, followed by Hobart (29:22.04), Cornell (29:28.18) Bucknell (29:31.73), and Marietta (29:37.67). RIT's line-up featured Daniel Knorr (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) at coxswain, stroke Paul Fisher (Wyoming, OH/Wyoming) (Wyoming, OH/Wyoming), seven seat ), Sam Fisher, six seat Matt Hesselink (Kalamazoo, MI/Kalamazoo Christian), five seat Jon Shannon (Lunenburg, MA/Lunenburg), four seat Evan Moreshead (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy), three seat Alex Bradley (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton), two seat Chris Massey (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields) () and bow Chris Guerra ( West Seneca, NY/Canisius).

“We had a great week of preparation and solid racing today by the men's varsity 8 and varsity 4,” said Assistant Coach Tom Keller. “Consistency with our crew and finding a united rhythm and impulse are of the utmost priority for us right now. We are looking forward to spending next week in a constant line-up and developing good chemistry and a fast boat for the Charles.”

In the novice eight event, RIT “A” finished third behind only Marietta and Hobart, with a time of 18:24.91 for the 5,000 meter course. The line-up was powered by coxswain Ray Seymor, stroke Keith Martin (Poughkeepsie, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes), seven seat Sean Kennely, six seat Fielding Confer (Waverly, PA/Abington Heights), five seat Alex Robinson, four seat David Gasser (New Milford, CT/New Milford), three seat James Grodem, two seat Andres Modragon and bow Mike Binger. RIT “B” completed the course in 20:36.14. The line-up featured Alex Ryan () at coxswain, stroke Taz Zavery, seven seat Alex Robinson, six seat Robby Keith, five seat Alex Lemenze, four seat Eric Bichan, three seat Nate Serfass, two seat Larry Merrill (Exeter, NH/Exeter) and bow Evan Smith.

The Tigers compete next weekend in the Head of the Charles on Sunday, October 24.
