WEST POINT, NY - The men's crew team travelled to West Point, NY this weekend and competed in the President's Cup Regatta, hosted by Army. It is the first time in program history the Tigers have raced at West Point. With the picturesque backdrop of the West Point campus, racing into a strong headwind made the Hudson River course challenging for all crews.

The Varsity 8 had a successful day on the water, finishing second behind Army (7:32.8). Powered by coxswain #Dan Knorr, stroke Cameron Staunch (Fairport, NY/Fairport)#, seven seat #Kevin Macksamie (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili)#, six seat #André Jarreau#, five seat #Justin Dixon (Factoryville, PA/Lackawanna Trail)#, four seat #Drew Lawlor (Erie, PA/Fairview)#, three seat Brett Fritzsch (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian High School), two seat #Spencer Trafton (Brockport, NY/Brockport) and bow (Schaumburg, IL/John Hersey)Chris Guerra (West Seneca, NY/Canisius)#, the Tigers completed the course in 7:41.7, ahead of URI (7:45.4) and Marist (7:46.6). It was a big race for the Tigers, giving the boat confidence as they approach the second leg of the regular season. Senior captain André Jarreau said of the race, “I feel like this was a breakthrough race for us. We took a hit to our line-up with Cam out for the last couple weeks, and were struggling to find a rhythm. We put together a really good race today—definitely something we can build on.”

Featuring coxswain Alyssa Mulholland (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy), stroke #Bryan Abbott (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury)#, three seat #Stu Burgess (Buffalo, NY/City Honors)#, two seat #Jason Gallant (Clinton, ME/Lawrence) and bow (Schaumburg, IL/John Hersey)Bryce Salmi (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford)#, the Tigers' Varsity 4 (8:21.6) finished second in a close race with Marist (8:17.2). Army (8:44.0) and URI (9:00.7) finished third and fourth, respectively.

RIT's Novice 8 finished fourth in their race in a time of 9:00.3. Marist's boat won in 8:30.9, followed by Army's 1st (8:38.5) and 2nd (8:52.4) novice 8. The Tigers' line-up was comprised of coxswain #Cole Bowden (Bradford, MA/Havemill)#, stroke #John Pagano (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic)#, seven seat #Ben Kaiser (Medina, NY/Medina)#, six seat Matt Hesselink (Fort Portage, MI/Kalamazoo Christian), five seat Mark Mezzenski, four seat #Evan Moreshead (Saco, ME/Tharntan)#, three seat Brian Kessalmeyer, two seat #Paul Fisher (Wyoming, OH/Wyoming) and bow (Schaumburg, IL/John Hersey)David Sonneborn (Syracuse, NY/Manlius Pebble Hill)#. Their race was the last race before the remaining races were cancelled due to deteriorating course conditions.

Following racing, the crew ate lunch on base at the mess hall, accompanied by Army rowers and other West Point cadets. It was an opportunity for the Tigers to experience the tradition of West Point. The welcoming atmosphere of the President's Cup Regatta made it a day to be long remembered by both student-athletes and coaches.

RIT races next weekend in Worchester, Mass. against WPI, Tufts and RPI.
