GRANVILLE, OH -- The RIT women's lacrosse team began the 2008 season with a 9-8 win over Denison University on Thursday evening. The Tigers scored three straight goals late in the second half to erase a two-goal deficit and pull out the one-goal victory. Jessica Cotton (Victor, NY) scored the game-winner and led RIT with three goals. RIT out shot the Big Red 29-25 but lost the ground ball battle 20-9.
Cotton scored the game-winner, her third of the contest, with 5:26 remaining in regulation on an assist from Eileen Hennigan. (Liverpool, NY/CBA).
It did not look good for RIT early in the first half. Denison rattled off three straight goals before Cotton's goal at the 21:20 mark made it 3-1 Denison.
The Big Red went up 6-1 with another three-goal run before Danielle Previ's (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) unassisted goal with 2:36 to play cut Denison's lead to 6-2 heading into half time.
After half RIT regrouped and scored the first two goals of the half. Cotton scored her second of the contest at 25:54, cutting the lead to 6-3.
Nadia Pasicznyk (E. Greenbush, NY/Columbia) made it 6-4 with her first collegiate goal at 23:25.
After a Denison goal made it 7-4 Ashley Pezze (Guilderland, NY) and Eileen Hennigan scored consecutive goals, cutting Dension's lead to 7-6 with 10 minutes to play in the half.
Lindsay Howard scored for the Big Red with 9:23 to play, making the score 8-6 in favor of Denison. That would be the last goal for the Big Red.
Nicole Erskine (Himrod, NY/Penn Yan) scored on a free position attempt with 8:41 to play, making it 8-7.
Amanda Crozier (Elmira, NY/Horseheads) scored on an assist from Erskine, tying the score at 8-8 and setting up Cotton's game-winning goal.
Junior Kelsey Evans (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley) got the start in net for RIT. She picked up the win allowing eight goals and making eight saves.
RIT will host SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday, March 11 at 4 pm on RIT's Turf Field.
