MEDFORD, MA – Three school records fell, as the RIT women's track and field team excelled at the Tufts Final Qualifying Meet on Saturday afternoon.
Emma Jones (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) became the first RIT women's runner to crack five minutes in the mile, placing second overall in a school record time of 4:59.95, which is a top-20 time in Division III this season. Jones broke her own record of 5:06.04, set last season.
RIT's 4 x 400-meter relay team of
Ali Binga (Lockport, NY/Starpoint),
Amelia Brunner (East Petersburg, PA/Hempfield),
Becca Schwan (LeRoy, NY/LeRoy), and
Marissa Dispenza (Batavia, NY/Batavia) shattered a three-year school mark in the event by just over two seconds, placing sixth overall in a time of 4:03.68.
Jess Calzolari (Longmont, CO/Mead) broke her own school mark in the triple jump for the third time this season, placing second overall with a jump of 11.42 meters. She smashed her old mark of 11.38 meters. Currently, it is one of the top-25 leaps in Division III this season.
Kendra Bush (Palmyra, NY/Newark) recorded a fourth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 12.24 meters, while
Madeline Pizzo (Irondequoit, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) was ninth overall at 11.18 meters.
Schwan placed seventh overall in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.29.
Kaitlyn Houghtling (Elmira, NY/Thomas A. Edison) and
Darcy DeAngelis (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) placed eighth and ninth, respectively, in the long jump. Houghtling had a top leap of 5.06 meters, while DeAngelis jumped 5.00 meters.
Samantha Kaplan (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) recorded a leap of 3.27 meters in the pole vault.
Binga and Young were 11th and 12th in the preliminaries for the 60-meter dash.
RIT will await possible NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship announcements. The 2017 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship takes place on Friday, March 10 and Saturday March 11 at the Res Recreation Center in Naperville, IL.
