Men's track and field continues strong start to the season at Spire Collegiate Open

The RIT men's track and field team enjoyed a great showing at the Spire Collegiate Open, held on Saturday afternoon. RIT had four winners and several other great performances.

On the track side, Matt Giannino (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy), who broke the school record in the 800-meter run last week, nearly broke the RIT record in the 3,000-meter run, winning in a time of 8:31.40, which was a tenth of a second shy of the school record of 8:31.39, set by All-American Mike Hardbarger (Parkersburg, WV/Ritchie County) in 2009. Mike Kurvach (Victor, NY/Victor) placed fifth, 16 seconds back of Giannino.

#C.J. Brunner# won the 800-meter run in a time of 1:58.14. Peter Thorpe (Milltown, NJ/Spotswood) was fourth in 2:00.64.

The distance medley relay team of Mike Kurvach (Victor, NY/Victor), Cameron Lee (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland), Adam Irr (Newfane, NY/Newfane), and Giannino were victorious by nearly 24 seconds in a time of 10:20.47. RIT's 4 x 400-relay team of Brunner, Zach Pfister (Waterbury, VT/Harwood), Eric Hambleton (Weare, NH/Bishop Brady), and Mike Andrews (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) were second in 3:30.82.

Mike Peterson (Newtown, PA/Newtown), Michael Krenzer (West Henrietta, NY/Rush Henrietta), Sam Rondeau (Lyme, NH/Thetford Academy)#, and Ben Casto (Fork Union, VA/Fluvanna County) led a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 5,000-meter run. Peterson won by 14 seconds in a time of 15:51.05.

Lee was second in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.44 seconds, while Irr placed fourth in the mile with a time of 4:25.34.

On the field side, Mike Haynes (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable) was third in the weight throw with a toss of 15.52 meters, and fifth in the shot put with a throw of 13.59 meters. Marquis Moore (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) was third in the long jump with a leap of 6.51 meters, while Jamie Dorren (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) placed fifth in the high jump with a leap of 1.93 meters.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Hamilton Invitational, which will be held in Clinton, N.Y.
