ROCHESTER, NY -- Sophomore Maite Vera (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Mayor San Loranzo) of the RIT women's tennis team was named Liberty League Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending October 16, 2011.

Vera took home the First Singles title at the 2011 New York State Women's Tennis Championships. Vera defeated Melissa Hirsch of Skidmore in the finals to win the title. Vera began her title run with a win over Casey Olsen from Rensselaer 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. She then went on to beat Joy Becker of Vassar 1-6, 6-1, 10-8 in a thrilling semifinals match. In the finals, Vera lost the first set 4-6, but battled back to take the second set 6-2. She took over in the third and deciding set, winning it 10-4 to claim her first state title.
