BUFFALO, NY -- RIT's
Ashlene Potter (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) scored the go-ahead goal in the 89th minute to give the Tigers women's soccer team a 2-1 win over Buffalo State in non-conference action on Tuesday. The win improves the Tigers to 3-0 on the season.
The Bengals appeared to score the go ahead goal with three minutes to play but the off-side flag was up negating the goal. That allowed Potter to score on a cross from
Chelsea Shoemaker (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) in the final minute of regulation.
Neither team generated much offense in the opening period, but RIT struck first on an own goal by Buffalo State 17th minute. A Bengal defender inadvertently redirected a cross by
Sarah Frisicano (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) into the back of the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Buffalo State's Melissa Mahoney evened the score at 1-1 with a long shot into the upper left corner in the 73rd minute.
The Bengals thought they took a late lead when Amanda Sauer connected on a long pass, but was whistled down for being offside.
With 1:37 to play in regulation, Shoemaker fed a long pass to Potter who one-timed it into the back of the net for her first tally of the season and gave the Tigers the lead for good. For Shoemaker, the assist was her team-leading third assist of the season.
Buffalo State owned a 16-7 advantage in shots, and corner kicks taking seven to RIT's one.
Ashley Valenti (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) improved to 3-0-0 on the season for RIT, allowing one goals and making three saves.
RIT, ranked 10th in the East Region this week, returns to action on Saturday, September 11 with a non-conference match-up with SUNY Oswego. Kick off is at 1 pm im Oswego, New York.
