GENESEO, NY - The RIT women's track and field team competed in the Geneseo Invitational on Saturday. The field athletes flexed their muscles and competed strongly, taking many of the top spots in several field events.
Freshmen
Belina Hooper (Meaford, Ontario/St. Mary's) and
Courtney Saunders (Canyon Country, CA/Canyon) both won their events, the javelin throw and shot put, respectively. Hooper won the javelin throw, tossing the instrument 32.09 meters. Saunders threw the shot 11.47 meters to secure the win for the shot put.
Not only did the tigers take first in the javelin, they also garnered second. Senior
Danielle Furman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) took second in the javelin with a throw of 30.38 meters.
Saunders placed highly in the discus throw as well, placing second in this event. Her second place toss was measured at 34.93 meters. Senior
Jamie Morey (LeRoy, NY/Notre Dame) and freshman Samantha Ramos also performed exceptionally well in the throwing events. Morey was second in the hammer throw and was third, right behind Saunders, in the discus. Morey tossed the hammer 44.65 meters and threw the discus 34.24 meters. Ramos placed fourth in the shot put, heaving the shot 10.63 meters.
Besides the throwers, jumper
Jasmine Maisonet (Baldwin, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) placed well in the long jump. Maisonet, a sophomore, placed third in the long jump, leaping to a distance of 4.74 meters.
The women's track and field team will be back in action next Friday and Saturday as the travel to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for the NYSCTC Championship Meet.
