Morey named Outstanding Field Athlete, as women's track and field places second at Empire 8 Championships

Jamie Morey was named the 2010 Empire 8 Outstanding Field Athlete of the Meet on Saturday.

ROCHESTER, NY -
The RIT women's track and field team placed second at the Empire 8 Championship Meet which was held at RIT Field on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon. The team battled the elements and was able to accumulate 114 points. Ithaca won the competition with a team score of 287 points.

Senior Jamie Morey (LeRoy, NY/Notre Dame) was named the Outstanding Field Athlete of the Meet, winning two events and placing runner up in another. Morey won both the hammer throw and discus. Her throw in the hammer was 45.39 meters, while her toss for the discus was 37.20 meters. Morey's discus toss also qualified her for the ECAC Championship Meet. Her first place wins helped her to earn dual All-Empire 8 first team honors. Morey was also named a second team honor for her second place finish in the shot put. Morey tossed the shot 10.94 meters.

Other All-Empire 8 first team honors were given to freshmen Courtney Saunders (Canyon Country, CA/Canyon) and Rachel Zoyhofski (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta). Saunders won the shot put with a toss of 11.36 meters. Zoyhofski won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a final time of 12:09.42.

The Tigers earned a handful of second team honors as well. Saunders placed second in the discus with a toss of 35.00 meters. Senior Nicole Varble (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) placed second in the 800-meter race. Varble came in a close second, crossing the line in a time of 2:24.98. Both relay teams also earned second team honors. The 4x100-meter relay consisting of Jillian Putney (Dansville, NY/Dansville), Abigail Arday, Alex Bush (Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Pope John XXIII), and Jasmine Maisonet (Baldwin, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) placed second, combining their efforts to finish in a time of 52.59 seconds. The 4x400-meter relay consisting of Arday, Jennie Springer (Rochester, NY/Fairport), Putney, and Varble were also second. The team combined forces to finish with a time of 4:15.76.

Arday and Putney also picked up points in their individual races. Arday placed third in the 100-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash. Arday sprinted through the line for the 100 in a time of 13.31 seconds, while finishing the 200 in a time of 27.54. Putney placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.99 seconds.

Maisonet, along with Jennifer Adams and Katie Sessions (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta), scored points in the jumping events. Maisonet placed in both the long and triple jump. In the long jump, Maisonet was fifth with a jump of 5.00 meters. She then went on to place fifth again in the triple jump, bounding to a distance of 9.99 meters. Adams was fourth in the long jump, leaping to a distance of 5.06 meters. Sessions was sixth in the triple jump, securing the position with a jump of 9.89 meters.

Other notable performances that helped to score point for the team came from Brianne Yannotta (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY/Sachem North), Samantha Ramos, Danielle Furman (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport), and Emily Valle (Rochester, NY/Fairport). Yannotta placed fourth in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:31.54. Ramos was fourth as well in the shot put, chucking the shot 10.06 meters. Furman was fifth in the javelin throw with a throw of 32.63 meters. Valle was sixth in the pole vault, soaring to a height of 2.50 meters.

The Tigers will be travelling to Geneseo next weekend for the Geneseo Invitational.
