Women's track and field finishes fifth at Rochester Alumni Invitational

ROCHESTER, NY -
The RIT women's track and field team placed fifth overall at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational on Saturday, April 10. The split team accumulated 62.5 points. The winning team was host University of Rochester with an impressive 229.7 points.  In addition, seniors Jamie Morey (LeRoy, NY/Notre Dame) and Nicole Varble (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) performed well at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic.

Morey, a senior thrower, had a solid toss in the hammer throw event. Morey tossed the hammer 42.73 meters. Her toss secured her the third place position in her flight.  Varble had a great performance in the 800-meter race. Varble ran a time of 2:23.77, improving upon her time from last week's competition at Cornell. Varble placed 45 out of 76 runners, many of which compete at a Division I level.

The top performances of the day at Rochester came from the discus and the 3,200-meter relay. Freshman Courtney Saunders (Canyon Country, CA/Canyon) won the discus with a toss of 35.10 meters. The 3,200-meter relay team consisting of Jennie Springer (Rochester, NY/Fairport), Arielle Januszkiewicz (Amherst, NY/Amherst), Kate Dubuisson (Winston-Salem, NC/Mount Tabor), and Grissel Gutierrez (Torrance, CA/Valley View ) also won their event. The relay team finished the race in a time of 10:36.91.

Besides scoring in the discus, Saunders also picked up points for the team in the shot put and hammer throw. Fellow teammate Samantha Ramos also scored in these events. In the shot put, Saunders placed third, throwing the shot 10.74 meters. Ramos was right behind Saunders, placing fourth with a toss of 10.57 meters. In the hammer, Ramos placed fourth while Saunders placed fifth. Ramos flung the hammer 37.34 meters while Saunders threw it 36.86 meters.

Januszkiewicz also scored in her individual event, the 1,500-meter race. She placed fourth overall, crossing the line in a time of 5:06.34. Freshman Anna Guthrie (Essex Junction, VT/Essex) was another strong performer in her event, the 10,000-meter race. Guthrie finished the race in a time of 41:55.99.

Junior Jasmine Maisonet (Baldwin, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) scored in both the jumping events. In the long jump, Maisonet finished sixth overall, leaping 5.07 meters. She then went on to place fifth in the triple jump, jumping 10.38 meters.

The team will be home next weekend as they host the Empire 8 Championship. The meet begins at 10 a.m.
