ROCHESTER, NY - The men's track and field team finished fourth overall at the University of Rochester Alumni Invitational on Saturday. The partial team was able to secure the fourth place position with a final score of 84 points. The University of Rochester won the invitational, accruing 145.5 points throughout the meet. In addition, a handful of Tigers competed at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic.
Junior Michael Dempsey won the pole vault competition. Dempsey soared to an all-time high of 4.95 meters, re-setting the outdoor school record. This is the first time during the outdoor season that Dempsey has set the school record, as his height provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Championship Meet.
Junior
Matt Marion (Lima, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) also had a great performance in the 400-meter hurdles. Marion flew over the hurdles and crossed the line in a time of 54.77 seconds. This time is only 0.47 seconds off from allowing him the chance to make a repeat trip to the NCAA Championship Meet. Fellow teammate
Cameron Lee (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland) also ran the 400-meter hurdle race, finishing in a time of 57.47. Lee also had an outstanding performance in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking in at 15.56 seconds.
Junior
Brecht Moulin (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) placed second in his heat of the 400-meter dash. Moulin sprinted around the track in a time of 49.75 seconds. This time secured him the thirteenth place position out of a pool of 58 sprinters coming from different divisions.
Senior
Nick Cox (Norfolk, VA/Norfolk) had a great race, finishing the 1,500-meter race in a time of 4:10.10. Junior
Anthony Schiavone (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) had a great race as well in the 100-meter dash, crossing the line in a time of 11.57 seconds.
Senior
Brian Walker (Brockport, NY/Brockport) had a strong heave in the hammer throw event. Walker flung the hammer 47.84 meters.
At Rochester, freshman
Marquis Moore (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) had an outstanding day as he won both of his events, the long and triple jump. Moore won the long jump with a jump of 6.61 meters. He then went on to win the triple jump, bounding 13.45 meters into the pit.
The team's other first place win came from the 3,200-meter relay team consisting of
Caryl Brunner (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore West),
Adam Irr (Newfane, NY/Newfane),
Nick Meeker (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley), and
Michael Hardbarger (Parkersburg, WV/Ritchie County). The relay team finished with a final time of 8:11.49.
The other two relay teams placed fifth in their respective events. The 400-meter relay team consisting of
Aaron Gordon (Aberdeen, MD/Beth Tfiloh),
Scott Hambleton (Weare, NH/Bishop Brady),
Chris Hartmann (Camp Hill, PA/Lower Dauphin), and
Bill Caton (Earlville, NY/Sherburne-Earlville) finished the relay race in a time of 45.37 seconds. The 1,600-meter relay team finished with a time of 3:40.29. That relay team consisted of
Sam Smolenski (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles),
John Holleran (West Warwick, RI/Bishop Hendricken), Matthew DeRosa, and
Zach Borden (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia).
Freshman Christopher Webb had a great day, placing third in both the 100-meter race and the 110-meter hurdles. Webb finished the 100-meter race in a time of 11.51 seconds and 15.88 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles. Meeker was the only other third place finisher, finishing third in the 1,500-meter race. Meeker crossed the finish line in a time of 4:07.24.
Sophomore
Mike Kurvach (Victor, NY/Victor) had a stellar performance as he placed fourth in the 5,000-meter race and qualified for the ECAC Championship Meet. Kurvach stayed with the top pack the entire race and was able to maintain his fourth place position, crossing the line in 15:06.94.
Freshman
Mike Haynes (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable) was the top thrower for the tigers at the meet, placing fifth in the hammer throw. Haynes flung to hammer 41.19 meters to secure him the fifth place position.
Junior Jonathan Grossman and Smolenski both placed sixth in their individual events. Grossman ran the 10,000-meter race, crossing the line in a time of 33:45.03. Smolenski competed in the 800-meter race, finishing with a time of 2:01.23.
The Men's Track and Field team will be in action next Saturday. The team will be hosting the Empire 8 Championship here at the RIT Track. The first events will begin at 10 a.m.
