ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT women's soccer team got two goals from junior Kendra Shelters (Lyons, NY/Lyons) as they played to a 2-2 tie versus Buffalo State on Wednesday afternoon. The tie moves the Tigers to 0-1-2 on the season, while Buffalo State goes to 0-0-3 on the year. Shelters has scored the Tigers last three goals dating back to September 6.

Buffalo State struck first in the tenth minute off a corner kick. Hannah Williams sent an out-swinging ball into the RIT penalty area. Junior captain Kristina Boberskyj out-jumped the RIT defense and headed a shot over the out-stretched arms of RIT goalkeeper Ashley Valenti (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) to give the Bengals a 1-0 lead.

RIT struck back in the 13th minute, tying the score at 1-1 on Shelters' first goal of the afternoon. Off a set piece, Ashley Pezze (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) fired a shot from just outside the Buffalo State 18-yard box. Meghan Jarrell made the initial save for the Bengals, but the ball slipped through her hands and rumbled around the box. Shelters pounced on the loose ball and tipped home a shot for her second goal of the season.

The Bengals would take the lead right back in the 14th minute on a goal by Leighana Kryzanowski. Melissa Mahoney played a through-ball onto a running Kryzanowski who slipped a shot underneath an outstretched Valenti for a 2-1 Buffalo State lead.

The lead would hold up until the 57th minute when Shelters struck again for RIT. Freshman Ashlene Potter (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) played a nice through-ball to Shelters who used her speed and made a nice run. She fired a one-timer into the lower right corner for her third of the season and her second game-tying goal.

Both teams would have ample chances in the remaining moments of regulation and into the overtime sessions, but neither team was able to tally the game-winner.

RIT out shot Buffalo State 17-14. The Tigers took three corner kicks to the Bengals two. Valenti made four saves for RIT and Jarrell made five stops for Buffalo State.

RIT will open Empire 8 play on Saturday, September 12 when they face No. 9 Ithaca College. Game time is 12 p.m. in Ithaca, New York.
