CLINTON, N.Y. -- Senior
Chris Somers (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) and freshman
Matt Broedel (Hamilton, NY/Hamilton) each tallied a goal to give the RIT men's soccer team a 2-1 win over Hamilton College in non-league men's soccer action in Clinton, New York on Wednesday afternoon. The win improves RIT to 2-1-1 overall and the Continentals fall to 0-1-0.
Somers gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead just 18 seconds into the second half when he carried the ball into the box and fired a high shot past Hamilton goalkeeper Mark Garcia.
Broedel made the score 2-0 with his first collegiate goal in the 66th minute. He received a head ball just outside the box and dribbled it into Garcia, who had come off his line. Garcia couldn't secure the ball as it bounded off to the right. Broedel reached the loose ball before any defenders could get to it and shot it into the open net.
The Continentals cut their deficit in half 1 minute, 18 seconds later. Paul Moakler sent one of Hamilton's 10 corner kicks into the box where Marcus Dormanen collected it and got off a low, bouncing shot that eluded the keeper. The goal was the second of Dormanen's career.
Bora Turgut (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) made three saves for RIT, which improved to 9-6-4 all-time against the Continentals. Garcia stopped eight shots in his first career start for Hamilton.
The Tigers held a 21-14 advantage in shots. RIT travels to Union College on Saturday, Sept. 12 for a 6 p.m. start.
