HOUGHTON, NY - The RIT women's cross country team placed second out of eight teams at the Highlander Invitational hosted by Houghton College on Saturday. RIT finished with a team score of 55 points, Ithaca College won the event with 27 points.
Jouhan Allende (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy) was RIT's top finisher, placing fifth overall out of 96 runners, blazing the 5,000-meter course in a time of 19:33.80. Freshman
Rachel Zoyhofski (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) was 10th overall in a time of 19:52.40. Junior
Abby Aker (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) was 13th overall in 19:53.70, while classmate
Arielle Januszkiewicz (Amherst, NY/Amherst) was three seconds back in 14th.
Freshman
Anna Guthrie (Essex Junction, VT/Essex) was RIT's fifth place finisher. She was 17th overall in a time of 20:02.30.
Joelle Scarnati (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) was 21st overall.
When asked about the team's performance, Coach
Dave Stevens said, “I feel good about the direction we are headed as a program. To run the way we did today at this point in our season is very exciting. The ladies have been putting in incredible training sessions recently, and despite the volume they are running very well. We will be a team to watch down the stretch.”
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the SUNY Geneseo Invitational at Letchworth State Park. The women's race begins at 11 a.m.
