ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT women’s tennis team ended their 2009 season with an overall record of 7-6, and enjoyed another successful season in the Empire 8, finishing third in the conference with a 6-2 mark. The Tigers fell to conference rival Stevens in the semifinals of the Empire 8 tournament.
Four members from the women’s team were selected to the Empire 8 All Conference Team. Senior
Alexis Stanley (Vestal, NY/Vestal) and junior
Amanda Berg (Mendham, NJ/Mendham) were selected to the first-team. Juniors
Michele Caporali (Endicott, NY/Union Endicott) and
Julie Burkett (McDonald, PA/West Allegheny) each earned honorable mention honors.
Stanley, in her final season with the Tigers, ended with an overall record of 7-9 in singles, and a doubles record of 12-4. She teamed up with Amanda Berg in first doubles to record seven wins and only one loss in Empire 8. In her three years at RIT, she posted an overall record of 23-11 in doubles play.
Berg, the 2008 Empire 8 Player of the Year, had another strong showing in 2009. She finished the season with an overall record of 14-4 in first singles, and teamed up with Stanley to finish 12-4 in first doubles. Berg finished with an Empire 8 record of 7-1 in first singles. In addition, Berg was named Empire 8 Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 5. In just two seasons, Berg is 29-7 in singles at RIT.
Caporali finished the season with an overall record of 7-9 in singles, and teamed up with Julie Burkett for a 1-2 finish in doubles. She garnered five wins in Empire 8 play, including wins against Hartwick, St. John Fisher, and Utica.
After spending her first two seasons on the RIT practice squad, Burkett proved to be a strong competitor for the Tigers throughout the season. She finished with an overall record of 8-7 in singles play, including wins in seven Empire 8 matches. In addition, she teamed up with Marie Revekant and Samantha Noe in doubles play, with records of 4-5 and 0-1, respectively.
Revkant and
Lindsey Gibson (Glastonbury, CT/Mercy) also helped contribute in singles play this season. Revkant proved to be solid at fifth singles for the Tigers. She advanced to the first round of the New York State Championships. Gibson competed in fourth singles in 2009, where she garnered five wins, including four Empire 8 victories.
Only losing one member due to graduation, head coach
Krystina Bachner will have a more experienced team that will look to improve on their results, and make another strong run in the Empire 8 Championship in 2010.
