ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT women's track and field team opened the 2009-10 indoor season with a good showing at the three-team RIT Early Season Invitational held at the Gordon Field House on Saturday. University of Rochester and SUNY Geneseo also competed.
Samantha Mitchell (Southlake, TX/Carroll) opened the season in fine form, winning the 55-meter dash and 200-meters both in ECAC qualifying time. She won the 55-meters in 7.45 seconds and took the 200-meters in 26.84 seconds.
RIT's 4 x 400-meter relay team of
Abby Arday (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder),
Alexandra Bush (Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Pope John XXIII),
Nicole Varble (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta), and
Jillian Putney (Dansville, NY/Dansville) was victorious in a time of 4:15.28.
Putney was second in the 55-meter hurdles, falling by just one-hundredth of a second with a time of 9.51 seconds. She had the fastest time in the preliminaries.
Arielle Januszkiewicz (Amherst, NY/Amherst) placed second the mile run with a time of 5:34.51. Varble was second in the 500-meters in 1:22.06.
Jamie Morey (LeRoy, NY/Notre Dame) finished second in the weight throw with an ECAC qualifying toss of 14.82 meters.
RIT returns to action on January 16, 2010, as they compete in the RIT Invitational, which will be held at the Gordon Field House.
