ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men’s hockey team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over Army on Saturday night. The win moves the Tigers back into a second-place tie for second in the AHA. With the win RIT is 6-0 in conference games at home in Saturday night games after a Friday night loss.
“We needed this win,” said RIT Head Coach Wayne Wilson. “We worked hard to create our own breaks and took advantage of them.”
Army took an early lead on a goal from Kyle Maggard. He beat RIT’s
Jared DeMichiel (Avon, CT) with a slap shot from the right face-off dot for his third goal of the season.
The Tigers tied the score at 7:59 of the first on
Tyler Brenner’s (Linwood, ON) fifth goal of the season.
Brennan Sarazin (Nepean, ON) did some nice work along the boards and fed Brenner who cut the center. He placed a hard wrist shot that beat Josh Kessel on the glove side tying the score at 1-1.
Stevan Matic (Burnaby, BC) gave RIT their first lead of the night at 4:05 of the second period on a short-handed goal. The puck popped up in the air in Army’s zone. It came to
Taylor McReynolds (Sherwood Park, AB) who fed to Matic streaking down the ice. He waited for the puck to settle and beat Kassel with a one-timer to the low left corner.
Cody Omilusik and Mike Hull tallied consecutive goals for the Black Knights giving them a 3-2 lead. Omilusik scored at the end of a five-minute power play for Army. The puck bounced right to him in front of the net and he stuck it home. Hull scored with a shot over DeMichiel’s shoulder on a break out.
Andrew Favot (King City, ON) tied the score at 3-3 late in the second on assists from
Jesse Newman (Kelowna, BC) and
Dan Ringwald (Oakville, ON). Newman fed Favot in the slot and fired a wrist shot that beat Kaseel top-shelf for his second goal of the season.
The Tigers took control in the third period, scoring three goals. Brennan Sarazin,
Mike Janda (Glen Ellyn, IL) and
Cameron Burt (Detroit, MI) put the Tigers up for good.
Sarazin broke a 3-3 tie with his fifth goal of the season at 3:52 of the third. He took a pass from Cameron Burt and deked an Army defender, beating Kassel with a nifty backhanded move.
Mike Janda tallied his first goal of the season at 15:32 of the third, giving RIT a two-goal lead. He skated down the right side and sent a centering pass through. It was blocked right back to his stick and he scored into the open net.
Cameron Burt intercepted an attempted breakout by Army on the fore check and scored into the empty-net, giving the Tigers a 6-3 lead.
RIT held Army to one goal in four chances on the power play and went 0-for-5 with the man-advantage.
Jared DeMichiel picked up his third win of the season, making 18 saves and allowing three goals.
The Tigers are back in action next Friday when they face Connecticut in Storrs in the first of a two-game series.
