MILFORD, CT – The RIT men's hockey team lost to Sacred Heart 4-2 on Saturday evening in AHA action. The Tigers scored the games first goal but could not hold the lead as they fall to 1-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the Atlantic Hockey Association. The loss snaps a five-game unbeaten streak by the Tigers over the Pioneers.
RIT got on the board first with a power play goal by
Alan Mazur (Burnaby, British Columbia/Merritt Centennials) (Burnaby, BC).
Andrew Favot (King City, Ontario/Aurora Tigers) (King City, ON) won the face-off back to
Dan Ringwald (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Blades) (Oakville, ON) who swung it over to Mazur, He fired a slap shot from the point that beat Stefan Drew to high side.
After dominating much of the play in the first period Evan Mladenoff tied the score at 1-1 with an unassisted goal at 9:50 of the first.
Chris Brown gave the Pioneers their first lead with an unassisted goal at 16:25 of the period.
RIT outshot the Pioneers 17-11 in the first period.
Jared DeMichiel (Avon, Conn./Chicago Steel) (Avon, CT) stopped nine shots for the Tigers in the opening period.
There was no scoring in the second period but plenty of action for both goaltenders. RIT fired 14 shots on net to Sacred Hearts 17.
Jared DeMichiel (Avon, Conn./Chicago Steel) was sharp in the second period. He made eight saves from close range and stopped all 17 he faced to keep it a one-goal game.
Tyler Mazzei (Kelowna, British Columbia/Nanaimo Clippers) (Kelowna, BC) had a great chance midway through the frame. He fired a one-timer from in close but Stefan Drew slid across the goal mouth making the sliding save.
RIT tied the score 2:30 into the third on a nice give-and-go between
Cameron Burt (Detroit, Mich./Green Bay Gamblers) (Detroit, MI) and
Brennan Sarazin (Nepean, Ontario/Nepean Raiders) (Nepean, ON). Cameron carried the puck into the zone. He passed to Sarazin who gave it right back to Burt who wristed a shot over Drew's shoulder.
The Pioneers did not trail long as Matt Gordon gave Sacred Heart a 3-2 lead just 11 seconds after RIT tied the score.
Eric Giosa made it a two-goal lead at the 10:31 of the third. He beat his defenseman down the ice and tipped home a pass from Evan Mladenoff.
RIT held a 44-33 shot advantage. The Tigers went 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
Jared DeMichiel (Avon, Conn./Chicago Steel) took the loss for RIT, making 29 saves and allowing four goals.
RIT returns home next weekend with a pair of games versus AHA rival Holy Cross. Friday's game gets under way at 7:05 pm at Ritter Arena.
